Tropical Dulce Dream: For Those Who Like It Sweet

Most mornings do not call for a quiet, contemplative cup. They call for something warm, sweet, and generous.
Tropical Dulce Dream is for those mornings. It is a single-origin coffee from Caldas, Colombia, and a cup for people who like their coffee sweet. The coconut and caramel are tasting notes: they describe how the coffee reads on the palate, and together they recall a well-loved Colombian candy. Nothing is added.
The cup leads with coconut, soft and rounded, followed by a buttery caramel sweetness that settles in and stays long after the sip. The body is substantial, enough to carry the sweetness, so the cup reads as balanced rather than candied. Sweet and full at once, which is the whole idea.
The beans come to us through our roasting partner, which works across many smallholder farms in Colombia. They are traditionally cultivated and non-GMO, like every Kukuwu coffee, and this one is a natural: the whole cherry dries around the bean before it is hulled, which lets the coffee's own sweetness come through.
This is a coffee that welcomes a little richness, so treat it that way. It takes milk well: a splash of warm milk or a small pour of cream rounds out the caramel without burying the coffee. A French press suits it: 18 grams of coffee at a coarse grind to 240 milliliters of water just short of boiling, about 96 degrees Celsius (205 degrees Fahrenheit), and four minutes before you press. Taken black, it still drinks sweet and full.
It suits the unhurried hours too: the slow Sunday morning, the afternoon when you want a small reward. But it was made for the ordinary weekday morning, and that is when to pour it.
